Rivet – The Fastener That Never Runs Old
The humble rivet is an old form of fastener for metal that is still used in different industries. This has been introduced during the two World Wars that is used to construct airplanes and boats. Surprisingly, this is still used up to this modern days.
In the past, building ship and other iron structures like bridges require the use of hot rivets. The rivet should be heated till it becomes red hot before placing it into the hole and join two pieces of steel or iron. Using metal tongues, one man should hold the rivet in place while the other should hit the rivet’s other end blinding it on the hole. The rivet will contract when it cools down which joins the two pieces of steel or metal tighter together.
But the hammering and heat required in the process, this is considered to be very dangerous. Much more complicated it is when getting the hot rivets. One of the best example for this is way back 1920’s when skyscrapers were built in New York. You couldn’t imagine how hard it is to to get hot rivets on a very high level.
But, things will always change which explains why the usual hot rivets are already replaced with cold rivets that is smaller. This is due to the fact that ships welded the steel hulls together for faster and stronger construction. When it comes to bridges, they are bolted together using fasteners.
Cold rivets are a more modern type which can be utilized by someone who is doing a DIY project. There are pop riveting kits available in DIY stores. Through the hole, the pop rivets are put attaching the gun and a moderate pressure allows the rivets to tighten itself. Since there are usually excess parts of the rivet, it can be crop off with the help of the riveting gun.
The aircraft industry has so much respect for rivets that they are still using them until this modern days. Rivets serve as a fastener to better hold two or more pieces together.
There is no other timeless fastener than the old rivets.
For different times, rivets tools have been a good choice when it comes to fixing and holding things together. This can be used for things that welding is not an option. For example, you need to join plywood and metal sheets, rivets can sure work good for this. These fasteners are a good choice especially with the materials that are susceptible to deformation. There are sure different sizes of rivets available on the market.
The fact that rivets are specially designed to be strong, there is no wonder why they are used in several industries and for different applications. Nowadays, there are also several rivet manufacturers that are producing quality fasteners. Rivets are known for its accessibility, cost and strength.
